Based On The Play By John Van Druten

And Stories By Christopher Isherwood

Music By John Kander & Lyrics By Fred Ebb

In 1935 Christopher Isherwood published "Berlin Stories", which told of the decadence of contemporary German society. The story was adapted for the stage by John Van Druten in 1951 under the title "I am a camera". Van Druten's stage play was adapted by Joe Masteroff with the music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, and  "Cabaret" was created.

Cabaret was first performed in New York at the Broadhurst Theatre on 20th November 1966, starring Joel Gray as Emcee and Jill Haworth as Sally Bowles. It ran for 1,165 performances, and won a Tony awards for best musical, supporting actor (Gray), supporting actress, score, direction, choreography, set design and costumes. In 1968 Dame Judi Dench starred as Sally Bowles in London.

In 1972 Liza Minnelli starred as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey , again playing the role of Emcee in the highly successful Hollywood film "Cabaret".

The film and stage musical differ slightly, however the film was very highly acclaimed winning numerous Oscars, and with Liza Minnelli now having become inseparable from the title song.
